yes looks like a male redpole, where I live I have a lot of long grass and get them in massive flocks in the summer they join up with thousands of goldfinches, sparrows, greenfinches, chaffinches and yellow hammers - just georgous and the sound - amazing. They love thistle heads ...yes i have plenty of them too:) Its winter here now, and most of the seed eaters come for food I put out, but for some reason they and the goldfinches dont, preferring perhaps the pine forest. But there was a goldfinch eating Nepeta (catnip) seedheads the other day out my window, its nice that they have discovered the new plants im bringing in- that diversifies their food source. I could watch them for hours! But have to get back to my desk.. Im also feeding waxeyes and bellbirds, and tui -natives that eat nectar and have incredible songs, so am running out into the cold wet misery every few hours to top up the sugar water!
