Can a ewe have a 'slight' prolapse???
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:00:10 pm »
HI all another lambing down yesterday evening - all good and well except I've just noticed her behind looks very pink...  NOthing protruding like the pictures I have googled or in the book, so nothing obvious to poke back in (and if I did need to I have an experienced neighbour who can help)..... question is has she just has a tough birth and a bit mashed up, or is anything that is unusual looking a prob?  She is weeing and doing everything normally. Will try and get phot - but she faces me every time I get near!!!!

I would get some antibiotics into her and anti inflammatories (that was the vets advice to us).  Also a spoon if it looks like coming out. We've had 2 like that this year, one a shearing who had a big single lamb - so a tough birth, and one an old lass who's muscles are probably not what they were.  Both were fine in a couple of days.

Is she straining? I had one with a fairly traumatic birth and she was staining for nearly a week. Metacam sorted her out eventually. Best to cover her as shep has said but hopefully nothing.

thanks - it started coming out a bit more so got friend to help - as soon as we raised legs and before we could wash, it slipped back in.  Given alamycin, and seems to be staying in.. fingers crossed she lives to raise lamb :fc: :fc: :fc: .

 :fc:  for her FiB.

Thought one of mine looked a bit "odd" at the back end last night. Small pink thing protruding  ???  ..... wondered if it was the start of a prolapse. Maybe it's normal sheep anatomy that I haven't noticed before. Daughter spotted it and thought the ewe was lambing. Seems to have gone back now. Keeping an eye on her.

It's quite common for ewes to have a bit of a proplapse and then it all goes back in again when they stand up. In this situation, you don't need to do anything - just keep an eye on it. If it gets to the stage where it stays out, then you probably need to put a spoon in.

..spoke too soon :(   all stayed in for about an hour then came out big time - but this time knew what to do - borrowed a harness, washed off, popped back in and have kept her penned with lamb in field Overnight.  Everything crossed!!  But that was a big thing - dead ewes/lambs aside this was my worst fear, and it wasnt as bad as I thought.

Well done   putting a womb back in is not easy , this is where you use sugar  or better still oxytoccin to shrink it and make it easier to get back in, and then a pain killer to stop her pushing, keep up the antibiotics

ah thats interesting re sugar - how?  I used warm water after washing off whilst standing, I turned her over and got unsuspecting (but always helpful and up for anything) neighbour to hold back legs up and it slipped in quite easilly. The harness was the material type and seems to be doing the trick ... i will buy something to keep in for next lambing - what is consensus on diff types ('spoon'??  plastic, webbing?).

Are you sure that you want to lamb her again? How old is she and has she got anything else going for her?

no no, sorry - not for her I wouldnt (I'm afraid she will be going on the final jouney when her lamb does, if she survives - I would keep her for fleece, but I think it would be impossible to ensure she didnt get in lamb again :( ), more that I now feel it's something I should keep in.  Thanksfor all replies as ever - you cant talk about this stuff with anyone else!!!!

well according to SITN http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/index.php?topic=21445.msg205063#msg205063 its not a done deal that a sheep who prolapses will do it again. oIs it worth giving her a second chance?  Could you put her to a smaller breed tup?

I've mentioned on an earlier post that 'd read prolapsing ewes may have a problem with utilising the calcium in their diet and I did an experiment one year and gave an exceptionally good ewe a second chance and a weekly injection of calcium for the month before lambing and she didn't prolapse so I repeated it again the following year with the same result.

very interesting Marches.  Have you repeated this?  Would you do this rather than cull?

that IS interesting - and are you talking about pre lambing prolapse or post, or is the study relevant to both?
