We paid about £15k for our wedding. We'd both worked for a good few years, owned our own houses (and had made money out of those) so we paid for most of it ourselves (my parents paid for the photographer, dinner and drinks, in laws for the cake and bar later). For us it was just an amazing chance to get all our family and friends together in one place (we'd been living abroad for a year by then) - probably the first and last time. Quite a lot of the budget went towards subsidising room costs so that everybody could afford to stay there and not feel obliged to say no because it was too expensive. It was just the most amazing weekend surrounded by everybody we love. Why begrudge people spending their own money how they choose? All that money will have gone to the local economy where we married - the people who worked on the hotel and various other locals (taxis, babysitters, hairdresser, florist, baker, photographer). All local, independents doing a great job of running their own businesses.
