Dafydd is actually the Welsh form of David,
"Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief;Taffy came to my house and stole a side of beefI went to Taffy's house, Taffy wasn't in;I jumped upon his Sunday hat and poked it with a pin" I'm Welsh (mostly) and when we moved from Wales to Shrewsbury, my new step-dad used to recite this frequently. Dafydd is actually the Welsh form of David, but the river through Cardiff (I think - could be Swansea?) is called the Taff. Perhaps the two were combined to make the character's name in the rhyme? Taffy is also the American word for toffee He's a lovely looking little lamb, well done you!
