Most amazing wood yard.
« on: March 16, 2013, 01:58:59 pm »
Last week, after a long Yellow pages and internet search, we visited a wood yard some 40 km from us. A chap working a band saw turned his machine off to take us on a tour of his yard. It was like visiting a sweet shop ! An amazing variety of seasoned woods in all sizes stretched out over  his site with lare trees stacked ready to cut.
We were after planks of cherry and oak but cut in planks of just a few cm. The chap guided us through his stock of every possible type and size of wooden beams, large blocks, planks and even roof shingles. He knew exactly where to find things and if the timber would be suitable for our needs. The lad wanted to talk English and he even knew the names of beech, popular, chestnut etc etc .
He also offers a mobile tree sawing service and will cut your tree into planks so you can store it for another day.
We left with cherry, oak, poplar, sequoya and he gave us some Douglas Fir to try. A lot of wood for 19€ but my point was that he was so happy to share his passion of wood, talk and show us about - all for 19€.

Maybe he just wanted a chat - and he did visit our web site to buy his son an Easter present.
It was such a pleasant "shopping" experience and pleasure to see so much timber. We will definetely go back to him.

Excellent, we have an old fashioned sawmill close to us and they bend over backwards to help.

Sounds lovely. I wish we had something similar near to us.

In one shed was the most massive lorry I have ever seen circa 1950 I reckon. At the time I thought that it would not be allowed on the roads but I reckon they must collect trees at first light so as not to block the roads.
Now I am thinking that I should develope my chain saw skills and make a totem pole !

We have a lovely wood yard here.  It's a family firm and the son of the founder still works there aged about 90.
