  The vision of McLelland with her knee in  a Jar is classic, I used to help out in Science, again with the unruly science classes, the Science teachers were all good friends of mine and it was an "in" joke to put a sex education lesson of a girl in the middle of a swimming pool and all theses men with swimming hats on trying to get to her first, I am not sure why but it ALWAYS gave me a fit of the giggles!! I am straight talking and always told my children the facts in a science way
I was not told anything at school until I took biolodgy and told all my friends about the cycle of the female reproduction,  not being able to get pregnant until the 14th day and that day only, errrr, think some of my friends may have had a shock when that one did not work

It is only when I watch that programme that I really feel my age. 
I was born in 195* at the 'East London Maternity Home' in Poplar - long gone.  It was run by nuns and I'm pretty sure is where 'Nonata's House' was based.  From what my mum said, it was very austere and strict .  With her second child she got out asap!  And I can't repeat what she said about nuns
Despite the impression given, birth control was available to ordinary women at that time.  I know because she took herself off to the Marie Stopes Clinic in 1950 and always said they were very helpful and not at all judgemental.  But her only advice to me was 'say No'

my mum said similar about the nuns when she went to a Catholic School   However, my gran went to a Catholic nursing home and got her own back as she kept calling all the nuns swear words, she had never swore until she developed demetia.
I wonder if that place you were born Bramblecot, has imprinted in your brain from your birth?

I love watching 'call the midwife ' .  It gives an insight into how my gandparents lived and how advanced we have become.
It also shows how our lives have changed for the worse. No family bonding, no mother at home or safe streets for the kids.

I feel we both work to provide as much as we can but balancing family life is very hard and extended family are too busy in their own lives to help.

Have we really improved over the years? Sometimes I really think not

Family's used to live near to each other and help each other out, not my family though  That mentally may well return when no one can afford to move out in the future!!
Child care costs and arm and a leg now, I think some families are worse off with them both going out to work, mind you, at least the children get stimulated at nursery as not all mummies and daddies are luverly

I just wish my mum were still here to comment on the accuracy of the show . 
It makes me realise how hard times were for her and my grandparents - not they they ever complained or expected anyone else to help them out.  I suppose now it would be called living in dire poverty .  Mum said we were good working class stock .  But my other Nan ran a beer house in Poplar and they were regarded as rough .  I wonder what they'd make of me with all my animals
