GFDs - black knees ok?
« on: February 20, 2013, 04:15:19 pm »
Hi all,
I know there are quite a few GFD owners on the forum, so I hope someone may be able to advise.
It is my first year with the GFDs. Yesterday one of the lambs was born with black knees. All the others so far have just had the grey nose and no other black.
Are black knees ok in terms of being able to register her?
I am not sure about whether to have a go at showing later this year, but would the black knees be a 'no' in the show ring?
Thanks
Julie

This thread on a GFD forum might be of interest as its about exactly that question.

The question is how much black?
A little bit can be overlooked, but two walloping great black knees coupled with black under the chin would be considered too much. As you are a new breeder if you are a DSBA member you should have access to a breed mentor who can come and look at your lambs and advise you what is o.k or not as the case may be. Where are you?

Thanks for the link. All interesting stuff being new to the GFDs.
I will try to get a photo tomorrow, but they are pretty big black blobs on her knees, so it sounds like she is a bit too black.
I am in North Cornwall quite close to John and Michelle Osbourne, who I met this year at a couple of the local shows, so I will see if they will be able to come and have a look once the lambs are a bit bigger.

That's brilliant, John and Michelle are both inspectors so you'll get good advice from them. My first successful show ram was bred by them and his descendants are still winning to this day (the ram in my profile pic is his grandson!) Good luck with the rest of your lambing and do try the showing, it's great fun!
