Feed Storage Bins?
« on: February 19, 2013, 07:21:52 pm »
I've been looking for some small waterproof storage bins for poultry feed.  I've seen a few blue plastic barrels about 30ltr, the ones often converted to pheasant feeders.

They seem to go for about £7ea at auction, is that a good price, or can I get them cheaper elsewhere?

Other suggestions on what I could use are welcome!  Must be waterproof, and preferably rodent resistant!

I use standard (not wheelie bins) plastic dust bins with lid for my animal feed!

I was after something a tad smaller and tougher really... I'm good at breaking things and the plastic dustbins I've used before are a bit flimsy...

yes, we've got big black bins with metal clip handles to secure the lid but also wee-er metal bins with a lid - remember if your bins are empty-ish and it's windy you might lose them or the lids.

Just be aware with plastic dustbins, squirrels and dare I say it rats will chew through the plastic to get to the feed even if you think they are in a safe area. I have known rats to chew through concrete to get to food.
Galvanised dustbins are far better, but of course more expensive.

Dead chest freezers here! Rodent proof, weather proof and goat proof. Goat proof is really quite an accomplishment

Dead chest freezer. OH complained at more 'junk' but happy now all bags are stored safely away.
I do have 1 blue barrel for layers pellets down in the hen hut for convenience.

Metal dustbins with wire contraptions to hold the lids on ...... otherwise the squirrels throw the lids off.  ::)

Paint them to look pretty, then they aren't junk but 'upcycled, bespoke farming utensils'  ;D ;D

I doubt I'll get away with an old fridge!  Currently battleing a clean up notice from the council...

Council won't be happy with an old fridge!  Might get away with it if I put it in a shed...
