Rat poison
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:46:54 pm »
Hmm, didn't know where to put this. I moved a small coup today, only 3 feet from a rat bait station, underneath was all rat nest, a dead rat (thanks for something going right) and about 5 half eaten bags of poison with seed scattered all around :o what do I do with the site? :-[ At the moment I have covered it with split plastic feed bags held down with rocks and old bricks.
Anyone any ideas, My OH helpfully suggested that I could concrete over it ::) In my imagination some helpful rats will come along, tunnel under the bags and eat the poison, hows that for optimistic

Clear up as much of the poison as you possibly can ie , brush up , sweep up , even dig up , and bag it for disposal or burn it , if you can be sure all of it will be burned .
The dead rat will be poison to anything that may eat it too , so dispose carefully .
A good long very hot bonfire will do the job ok .

Depending on how big the site is, you could have a fire directly over where all the poison is. A good hot fire should burn all the nasties away. Burn for 2/3 hours. Job done! (If the site is small enough to have a fire covering it that is)

best thing to do with old bait is to bury it , dig a hole at least a foot deep and put it in there along with the dead rat . The only other option is to send it for incineration (never burn rat bait yourself) it has to be done like clinical waste and is expensive . that is the only 2 options recommended by the B.P.C.A. (British Pest Control Association)
Hope this is of use ,
                               Thanks Reg
