Piggy love?
« on: February 10, 2013, 08:50:33 am »
Hello,

We've borrowed a boyfriend for our OSB gilt Flo. After giving the fella a day to settle in (basically he's scared of everything), we've now introduced him to Flo. She's more interested in eating his food but  Rocky is already trying to mount her and pushing her sides. I'm pretty sure she's not in season. So, is this the sort of thing the boar will do, ie will he keep trying to get his leg over whether she's in season or not, or is it just a dominance issue whilst they first meet?

Nudging the back end and stomach (and sometimes it's fairly extreme looking  :o) is the boars way of stimulating the pig and encourages the release of eggs for fertilisation (important if you ever do AI to make sure you do this job  ;))
He's showing good signs (despite being scared) and when she is in season she'll stand to let him do this - it's all good  Another thing our boar does is to 'put on the aftershave' he'll roll in mud, completely cover himself in it - then mate with the females, it must make them more attractive to the opposite sex  :D
So don't worry - the boy's doing good

Here are the romantic couple, pre-nap - talk about beauty and the beast heh? To be fair, poor Rocky was living in a swamp.

I did think about buying some cigarettes for our boar, but I don't like smoked bacon  : :innocent:

As I work full time now and only get to see the pigs when I feed in the morning and at night, I was thinking I would never know the exact date of mating. Well this morning, I thought it had gone awfully quiet around the back of the ark and when I went to look, hey presto, the 2 pigs were doing the do! Was all very quiet and genteel

Anyway, what I am wondering is.....is it a good idea to keep the boar over another season, ie for another 3 weeks time or will it be OK to send him packing in a weeks time?!

I'd keep him there for another 3 weeks or so. Just long enough to check she's definately held and save you having to go and get him again if not.
Glad it's all happening

Don't forget to make a date in your diary of the 'doing the deed' date as this will give you a dairly accurate farrowing first due date, we normally add four days onto it and are bang on!
