I looked on Green shifters and saw a few that I liked, 2 in Shetland, less than £150,000 BUT, we would need to earn an income, great for some one who works from home or a long distance lorry driver...
We watched Monty Don last night and fell in love with S France...I used to go on holiday there and loved the rustic feeling......again...work is needed....I have a good friend there that runs a B&B, she sold one and has now moved...she had horses and sheep!!!
I think if i had the choice I would go to France, then again S Ireland looks wonderful

I love the idea of France - but for the language barrier.

Orkney - I think I would get pretty miserable with the dark in the winter, Cumbria is bad enough.

Gotta earn a living though - how to do that in either place

One of the things my daughter gets paid well for is writting....blogs and other stuff about her trade in the cosmetic industry, then there is I.T
One thing the cost of living would be more expensive do to travel .

The language barrier shouldn't stop you I reckon. After 20+ years of spending most of the year in SE France, my parents are pretty fluent - although their accents are still terrible! And you might find some french friends too - my mums best friend is a Parisian lady who is a real hoot and is excellent at being stern down the phone when required!! Earning a living, yes that is tricky as lots of French peeps over here working ATM as thy cant find work there.

Good God over a quarter of a million for a bit near the Broch what a hoot.  worlds gone mad.
Makes me shiver just thinking of moving to the Islands, i think you need to be born and bred there to survive long term in those kinds of places, people will come, have a few nice years, then return to the comforts of mainland living (aka shelter and trees and sometimes, no wind) when the novelty wears off. 
And, makes it impossible for local youngsters to get on the housing ladder.

Part of me would love to live a wild life.........then part of me doesn't 
I am just 60 but worry if I am too far from humans I may well feel lonely and also its more expensive as you need to drive more, here I can use my free bus pass and walk a lot of places.......Oh to be rich and fit
