Delayed implantation??
« on: February 02, 2013, 04:26:59 pm »
Like a few others I also got our girls scanned today. Well done to the others with successful outcomes!  I was also relieved to find out our 29 girls are pregnant, with all the poor grass and bad weather I didn't know what to expect as the girls seemed to lose condition at the tail end of last year and I feared that some may well have miscarried.

Everything went as planned with just one peculiarity. The scanner man said that one of the ewes was only around a month pregnant and would lamb late May/early June. Can't work that one out as we took the ram out on 9th December and the girls haven't had any unexpected visits.

So, does anyone know if it is possible to get a delayed implantation in sheep? The only other thing I was wondering is whether she has aborted and the scanner man was just seeing remnants of a foetus. I did ask him if the latter was possible but he said that although there was a small possibility it was unlikely as the scan would normally show something different for an abortion.

Anyone got any thoughts?

Quite likely, I'd have thought, unless you have a neighbour with an athletic ram.
