Weaners
« on: January 19, 2013, 10:02:45 am »
Despite all the doom and gloom regarding pig keeping and weaner prices we cannot source locally any for end of Feb...ish
We wanted berkshires again this time and went back to the place we originally bought   now OH prefers gilts   doesn't enjoy keeping boars   and we were told they have nothing available and a waiting list for the forseeable future
We're disappointed of course but have to be pleased someones doing something :sunshine:

As usual, no location as to where you are.   Always useful - Tamsaddle

We're in Lincolnshire Tamsaddle  and had a pretty awful job sourcing the first time. We'll keep looking for something we fancy we just both agreed that the sweetest pork we'd tried so far was the Berkshire.
The point of my post however was that someone somewhere seems to be doing some good :sunshine:

I know one of the smallholders in Lincolnshire area that was doing Berkshires has had to sell up.  I don't know if anyone locally bought their breeding sow's and boar though.  May be worth an ask on the LSSSC website.

We are still debating having some weaners later in the year, so will be looking ourselves soon.

If anyone in south Wales/south west of England fancies Tamworths, I'll have a few ready to go mid-February.

Padge: have you tried the Berkshire Pig Breeders' Club? Website is http://www.berkshirepigs.org.uk/ I'm sure if you email them, they'll be able to put you in touch with someone near you. They are also on Facebook now, if you use it.

Have you posted a 'wanted ad' on the Berkshire website, I know some Berkshires were available immediately in the Linconshire area....little too soon???
