Mogwai is looking very sorry for herself.  Did not emerge from her bed yesterday morning, and refused all food.  Drinking water though.  This morning, doing runny poos, and still not eating, but drinking plenty.  Tried her with all sorts of tasty titbits, but use.  Little Lucky thinks its great, all these nice things for her to eat. 
 
Only thing that may have caused it, could be either drinking the icy cold water, or me mixing the meal with very cold water.  Is there anything anyone can suggest i could give Mogwai to help her recover?

roxy it could help if you say what type of scours your dealing with grey, watery just loose.

has she a temp ?

is she able to get up and walk about ?

is she upto date with worming ?

have you given her electrolytes in her water (i cant remeber the name of the one i use for pigs will have a look for you)

tulivin sacrolyte it comes in single sachet form.

kaolin also works for scours it comes in powder form.

We had trouble with our gilts for a couple of days last year when the temp dropped to -8.  They didn't eat,want to do anything.  I think I didn't put enough straw in their arks and they just got blimmin cold.  They are bigger this year and coping better with the temps -12.

Agree with KJA check her temperature, it maybe she's been eating snow and drinking icy water and her core temp is down, make sure she has plenty of straw and her bed is dry. Then you could try making a warm mash of pig nuts or porridge and a spoonful of something sweet (treacle?) to get her warmed thro. The bonus is that she's drinking keep coaxing her with warm water (with electrolytes if poss) if you can, a flask full of hot water in a bowl or bucket diluted with cold if you have no hot taps nearby.
If you're not happy she's responding give your vet a call.

I put the electrolytes in Mogwais water as soon as i saw she was not right. Runny droppings are the colour of pig meal, but she seems to have stopped doing any now.  Still drinking, but not eating.  Heavy snow outside so she is not outside as such, but she does get up and walk to the water tub, and then root in the straw, but not interested in food at all.  Plenty of bedding down. Temp is normal.
 
My vet is some distance away, and at present would not get down the track with the snow.  Certainly cannot carry Mogwai up the lane  to a trailer!.  Vet insists on seeing the animal, and will not give medicine without seeing first.
 
Have tried every food I can think of.  Will try the porridge and treacle tomorrow and see.

  roxy you dont mention if she is upto date with her wormer it could be as simple as that.


a few months ago i had a phone call from a local sheep farmer one of his kids pet kk's was refusing any feed just wanting to lie about and generally not looking good, his vet not good with pigs and had no clues hence the call to us. first question we asked when was she last wormed ? . a shot of wormer 24 hours later and the pig was 100%. he could net belive it especially as he had given his kids the dreaded talk (she was going to the hunt).

Pigs wormed regularly, but are about due again, so will worm.  Thank You for suggesting,
 
Mogwai got up to meet me this morning, had a drink of water, and ate a banana......which is something.  She has had no food since Wednesday evening.  Thankfully she has a bit of size about her, where as Lucky her sibling is about half her size, and cannot afford to lose weight.

Ate a proper tea last night (Mogwai, not me!) and came out in the snow this morning.  Seems very lethargic, but at least she is eating again.  Have taken a couple of pics little blue, and will put them up later

No, not in pig,.  Forgot to say,there was an horrendous,foul smell coming out of Mogwais mouth.  Mad me heave.  Would she have vomited, and thats what the smell was?

So many things it could or couldn't be but is it possible she'd eaten something she shouldn't have? which is probably what put her off her food and now she's heaved it up her appetite is coming back.
Keep an eye on her, food little and often would be my way until she was back to normal self.
Also keep checking her temp in case it was something really nasty and has casued gastro infection. Also monitor her pooing if she's constipated she may have had to heave up to get rid. Know the weathers bad but getting her out and walking will help the digestive system and get things moving if that is the problem.

is it possible to check her teeth?
could have a nasty tooth or gum that has stopped her eating & made her feel "badly"

(I say that    ... the only way I'd see my pigs' teeth is if I'm waving food above them, and even then.. !! )

Really bad smell from the mouth could be an abscess.  If so I'd recommend a vet as she'll be in quite a lot of pain.
