Found - Chinchilla Rex Breeding stock - Nr Birmingham/Bedford
« on: January 16, 2013, 01:11:15 pm »
Hello there,

My OH and I are looking to buy an unrelated breeding trio of Standard Chinchilla rex rabbits. We are looking to get them in Feb/March. Age is not a big issue, however it would be better if they were young enough for easy litter training.

We intend to breed them for meat and fur (hence why we are after a specific breed). We are experienced rabbit keepers and will not be breeding intensively and all our rabbits are in large hutches with inclusive runs and will be well looked after until they are ready for dispatch.

If anyone has stock available or knows a breeder we could contact in the birmingham area we would appreciate a pm. Thank you all! :)

Although we live near birmingham we could also pick up from the bedford area as we travel there regularly.

My Rex doe is kindling as we speak, I can hardly contain my excitment! If she were a human woman in labour she would probably lamp me for saying this but the sound of her labour is so beautiful!! Its the signal of new life arriving - it's so amazing!!

I have to keep restraining myself from popping out there to check on her! Must remember not to get too attached to the babies othwise i'll be in trouble with the OH!  :innocent:

That is a new use of the word kindling - one of my loves of the Internet - learning new things

If you get a nice chunky female surplus to requirements I might just give you a shout - one of my two does has had a visit from the sex change fairy

Good luck with the littlies!

I'm afraid there won't be any this time round. It was my does first litter and it hasnt gone well. She started kindling but there was still no babies after a few hours so I suspected that something might have been amiss. There was blood in her toilet area and she was having contractions but was moving around the cage rather than staying in the nest box. Went to check on her and saw her kit being born, she gave birth to a single large kit straight onto the floor of the hutch, they after birth came with it at the same time. The kit wasn't breathing so I tried to revive it, grabbed some of mums fur from the nest box (which she had lined beautifully) and used it to rub the baby. I was doing this for about 5 mins before giving up, then a took a good look at the kit, thats when I saw that mum had bitten its back feet off.

She seems to be fine now, has gone to the toilet and has eaten/drank since giving birth. My theory is that as it was one single large kit it must have got stuck and mum got distressed and tried to pull it out.

Breeding the rabbits for meat and fur was meant to be my first toe in the water of the great smallholding lake. I am so gutted and feel like I've fallen at the first hurdle. I did loads of research and don't know what I could have done differently. I was also relying on this litter to give me a new doe which would be unrelated to the buck i have so i'd have an unrelated trio. Oh well, I guess we'll just try again...  :gloomy:

Oh no, I'm so sorry.

I'm on another rabbity forum, and gather that first litter disasters are pretty common - neglecting, or nipping feet off, or not keeping them warm etc etc.

There's nothing you could have done with one stuck baby.

Is there any way to double check that she definitely doesn't have any more inside?

I don't think there is anymore, the after birth came away with the kit and I have palpitated and can't feel anything. She is also going to the toilet and eating and drinking normally. Her behaviour has also returned to normal so I think that is it.

I'll give her a few days then put her in with our buck and fingers crossed we will do better next time!

I had read about the likelyhood of problems with first litters but I had let myself pin so much on this one litter - it was one of those 'it won't happen to me' scenarios!

we 'acquired' (had dumped essentially) 7 guinea pigs all of which were 'male'. Except for one. she was preggers and she too had one single massive (as in half the size of mum) pup that died. Schmallengberg for small animals?
