Hi Guys,


I dropped our first weaners off to the abattoir yesterday, and I've had post mortem report back.  I was hoping hoping someone could explain if it's serious and what I need to do differently next time to prevent it...


I sent 4, and the results were:

Post-mortem inspection - offal conditions and parts

So is this bad or normal??

We've never had any rejects from our offal - only trotters that couldn't be dehaired enough 

I don't think it's normal, though maybe others will disagree.
Ventilation in the arcs and/or damp bedding could account for the pneumonia (but it's been a miserable damp year everywhere !) and worming (by injection) might help with the milk spots in the liver. Not sure about the kidney though, sorry. Hopefully someone else more knowledgable will be along soon to give you more advice.

had any of the pigs been off colour ? i think you will find ofal from 1 pig has been rejected by the MI.

we usually get a report even though its clear of rejections.

wev never had a report or rejection. pnuemonia is supposedly caused (in sheep and cattle anyway), not by the cold, but when it starts to warm up again after being cold, especially if they are kept inside. it has been v mild where we are.
ask your vet about any prevention, as im pretty sure other species can get jabbed, not sure about pigs.
its probably just bad luck with the weather etc.

We had an offal reject note for milk spot on the liver of one of our porkers last time which i thought might be because i missed worming one of the weaners we kept(normally mark as i jab them but might of got sidetracked by phone)
The pneumonia comment most likely means there was fluid in the lungs and had you kept the pig longer may have developed into full blown pneumonia which as someone has already said is due to changing conditions warm, damp then cold (check ventilation flow in your arks...we drill two inch holes in the apex of ours to improve flow)
Kidney lesion i have never come across before.
You could discuss the findings with your vet if you are concerned.

We once had a liver rejected for milk spot, but despite this we got the correct number of livers back when I collected;  I didn't read the report about it until I got home.   Presumably someone else's offal, as there were definitely no white spots on the liver I got and I used it as normal.   Nevertheless the meat was completely OK and as delicious as any other.  Never knew what it signified, as all our pigs have always been up to date with worming, and since then, we have never had another liver condemned.   Afraid I don't know anything about the other 2 offal rejections.  Tamsaddle

Kidney lesions are often caused by parasites which would also explain the milk spot. There are other reasons but this is often the main one. With regards to the pnemonia, have any of your pigs ever been of colour or breathing funny, or have you ever had to give them antibiotics. I have had weaners who have caught pnemonia and their lungs were rejected even though they recovered, lungs should be a salmon pink colour and apparentely the pigs were red.

You should always have a report it's on the eaml2 site under movement history, if you click the the destination name it should give you the vets (FSA Feedback) even if it says there are no blah blah

wer in scotland. never had as report from abattoir and nothing on the scoteid movements. we just get weight and backfat details stuck to carcuss.

No must admit we have never had a report back and we are in  scotland. We were just told about the milkspot etc when we picked up the carcasses.

I thought Scoteid would do it, in England part of the payment you do is for the vet and well if you're paying for something you want something back even if it's nothing to report.... but I don't really keep a breast of what these foreign countries do
