I have just had a call from my vet regarding Benjamins disbudding. she has never done a pygmy goat before and is concerned about a. the anasthetic and b. the danger of frying his brain. She wondered if anyone had ever used Hornex paste and if so how well it worked.
She does not have a small iron so needs to know what size she should use if we have to go down that road.
I have to admit now I am really scared but the person who wants him does not want horns as he will be around wery small children.

I'd be looking for an experienced vet, are there any other practices around. Your regular vet will probably be relieved if you find an experienced vet she can refer you to

I'd find someone whose done them before, as there definitely is a risk. I bet she'll be hugely relieved if you can find someone else to do it.

Are you near goose pimple? I can recommend a goat vet in Kinross, who I know are ok with disbuddings. Probably too far though.


We have disbudded pygmy's occasionally, normally we leave them til they are a bit older than the vets like, about 2 weeks old, use the same size of burner as for the bigger kids (we use a small size calf burner, for which we have the bigger adjustment to make the bigger size). Do use a bit less anaesthetic, we use a local.

Try Greenside Vets in St Boswells, they do have a website, I cannot find their number just now. I use them for my (dairy) goats, but Nigel Brown has lot of experience, probably also Pygmies. You can also get your boy castrated at the same time, this will reduce scurrs growing to some extent too.
 
Best to phone before 9am and ask to speak to Nigel directly.

Just spoke to my vet again Anke and she says Nigel is a great friend of hers so she will speak to him. Had a feel at the little chaps head today and to be honest I can't even feel any sign of buds.

That's good, hopefully he will be able to fit wee button in... I am not sure but think Pygmies are done a bit later than dairy goats...

No Amanda but Benjamin Button goes in tomorrow morning to Berwick to have it done , vet there says he knows what he is doing.
