Pietrain x lop weaners
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:25:17 pm »
Someone near to me will be selling Pietrain x lop weaners in March. I have read up on both breeds but wonder what I can expect from this cross breed.
Has anyone got any experience of this cross or any thoughts?
I usually keep a couple of weaners for 9 months or so then butcher for our own consumption. They would be housed within a stone floor and wall barn with open access to land outside ( electric fence).
many thanks Martin

In my limited knowledge of the the two breeds i would say the Lop will give you excellent pork with the leaness but bulk of the pietrain. They will most certainly have large rear ends but given the Lop is a pale pig watch out for sunburn & heat stress issues thro the summer months although with a pietrain cross should give you blotchy pigs which might be better.
