I have edited my initial post. On another note do you happen to know the reason that a part of sussex that you are in starts with a K but east and west sussex start with an S

My herd prefix is NS and I'm in Northamtonshire - South.

We live in the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, and our prefix is GJ.

In a word NO !

But I have long suspected that whilst fundamentally there is a geographical aspect to the codes, they are not at a county level. Suspect they might relate to some 1940/50's coverage by authorities of farms - possibly even back as far as the War Ags (wartime agricultural executive committees). So an area might be mainly in Kent (so start with a K) but have parts in East Sussex. Don't think they are related to boundary changes, but another thought.

Otherwise my definitive answer would be that these are allocated by authority so why would you expect to have logic or common sense behind it !!

Mine is GL. I'm in Caerphilly, South Wales. Caerphilly is a county as well as a town, but GL comes from the old county of Glamorgan.
