Ahhh that explains it - see the "Light pollution thread". 
We have had a couple of clear nights and every time I have been out for wood I have seen shooting starsin the South ( we live in central France).

It was snowing here last night - not a lot but enough to make the stars invisible.  Our view to the south is free of light pollution (north is Scotlands Central Belt which stops us seeing the stars and the Aurora too).
 
The best nights for viewing are of course the coldest but it's worth getting togged up to watch a meteor shower

Thanks I'll wrap up and head out tonight!  Ive never seen one.  I was convinced I was seeing the northern lights 2 nights ago - but went on http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/ which said no activity - so just clouds then!!! .  We do see them here apparently - but as I am usually in bed by 9, I expect my chances are quite slim!!

I stood outside freezing my buns off last night but could barely see the stars.  Then I realised that the mist droplets were freezing in the air and falling like sparkly sprinkles - beautiful 
 
I didn't see any shooting stars though
