Prices for slaughter
« on: December 02, 2012, 08:27:29 pm »
I'd be very interested to hear what people pay to have their piggies seen to at their different slaughter houses - we have found quite a difference in price between the two that are equidistant from our farm.  It'd be interesting to know both the straight forward slaughter price, and the kill and cut price, if you know that too.

I am going to check the price of the second of mine before posting as I can't believe that it is so different and wonder if they quoted incorrectly!

Haven't taken any for a few months but it was £20 for slaughter. We get the carcasses back just split so don't know about butchery costs.

That's in line with our main one - but the other is £28!  Seems a big difference.  I am wondering what they offer for the extra 40% they charge.

In the East Midlands we have used ...

Coates (in Alrewas, nr Burton on Trent) - we have used them a number of times and their charge seems to vary a lot but including sausages and dry cured bacon it is the region of £70 all inclusive.

T G Sargents (in Bramshell, nr Uttoxeter) - we have limited experience of using them but they charge £35 all inclusive but excludes sausage and bacon I believe.

Maddocks, Maesteg, South Wales

Under 45kg = £27 kill and joint

Over 45kg = 60p per kg kill and joint (or 50p per kg for kill and cut into primals)
(vac pac is 40p per bag extra, and boxed is £2.40 per pig more, sausages are £2.20/kg (min 7kg))

Not sure how much just for a kill, or kill and split.

I can only read with envy the prices you all quote. I live in the Orkney islands and the prices are somewhat more expensive here. To slaughter a pig costs £38 here. If you want it butchered then that will cost you £49. The high abbattoir cost I can understand as the waste has to be sent the lentgh of Scotland to process it but the butchery costs are just a rip off. With the cost of feed increasing it iis no longer viable to do pigs here so we got rid of our sows. We will just buy a weaner to fatten and butcher it ourselves. You cant beat the flavour of a good home reared rare breed pig. ;D

Tiny abattoir but very good. About £55 kill and cut. I can go elsewhere but I wouldn't be sure of welfare or that I'd get MY meat back.

Kill and cut - £50+VAT, irrespective of size. Next year I'm going to rear bigger pigs!
