How easy is it to grow veg with babies around
« on: June 04, 2009, 10:22:02 am »
Okay a bit of an odd question has anyone started a raised bed system (about 2 inches of the ground) and also had little babies around.

Am just thinking about next year when junior is born, bump would be 6/7 months old by the time i would have to start about sowing /planting out seeds.

I know my sister's baby who is almost 1 (next month) hates going in to the garden for some reason.

Anyone got an idea or hints/tips to help out.

(I did have an idea of having a travel playpen outside so baby could still see me). Also have a baby carrier but can see problem with digging with that on my belly or back.

just sit the little tike in the middle of the bed and let it play about - bit of muck is just what a baby needs.

Obviously you'll want to move him/her out the way to sow your seeds, but i don't see why it would be a problem

only danger of having a wee one out in the garden is the sun. So lather on the sun cream, hat, wee parasol and let them sit out there with you as you weed, sow, harvest.

if it's anything like me when i was little , I don't think suncream would be a problem as i was normally covered in mud head to toe lol

Sun cream is not a problem for us as hubby was once a ginger harried child,) he grow out of it now, lol)
So normally cover the other kids in suncream.

But the youngest is 16 so am not really used to babies at the moment. but i'll now i learn

they are surprisingly resilient - and whilst i wouldn't advocate shaking, bouncing, dropping or submersing for prolonged periods, you'll find they survive most things quite well, especially in a garden - just keep the feeds and chemicals out of harms way and let them get on with it.

and like animals, they'll soon learn the electric fence around the playpen isn't to be messed with!!

lol, Don't really have chemicals etc in the garden or near the garden,

Feed no animals in the garden except hubby and step son (but they live in the house)lol

I understand a lot of it is common sence which is needed, i normally 'check areas' out before step son goes near as he is disabled and it need to be baby prooffed for him (the only problem with little T is that he is a 5ft something baby hehe)

Hi Linz,
You'll probably find that by 6-7 months your little one will be into quite a good routine and will nap in the morning and afternoon for a couple of hours so if you get one of the portable baby monitors you'll be able to work outside while they sleep and listen in on them. Or a pram/buggy they can be sitting up in with toys clipped in or hanging down to amuse them and they'll be able to see you. Am I right in thinking you're back garden has slabs ? If so another option is a baby walker for 20-30 min for exercise, but only if there's no steps they can send it down ! When the time comes you'll know what will suit them best.
Both mine were walking by the age of 1 so by the end of the summer you'll be building baracades to keep them OUT your raised beds ! LOL!
If there's one thing I've learned since having kids - they're all so very different and until he/she makes their arrival you'll not know how they're going to be. My first was chilled out & really happy with the routine we got her into, 2nd one was much more hyper and set her own routine and the wee man, now 5 weeks, seems to be a happy chilled out wee fella - but only time will tell !
PS How much longer for you now ? It must be getting to within 8 weeks of delivery ?
Are you feeling well and relaxed or is the panic starting to creep in yet ?

Linz, I didn't get much done when they were that small, but it's worth a go. You'll feel so good about every single little radish! Just let someone else do the weeding and digging and you just enjoy the garden with the baby in a pram and parasol (if we get a summer next year)! I wouldn't worry at all about mud and earth, it protects from allergies if they eat it when they are little (just mind any cat poo, that's not so healthy I reckon).
Re bump size - if your timing is right and your bump is bigger - do skip all the sweets. Mine were both over 9 pounds because I couldn't keep the spoon out of the icecream and it was not nice in the end...Lets' hope you just got it wrong , lol :&>

lol,
i must admit i do like a treats but also like my fruit so have been eating lots of apples /oranges/satsumas/pears and lots of raw veg eg tomatoes/carrots/lettuce. Don't think i have been over doing the chocolates /crisps /biscuits as we don't tend to buy them in that often althought i would love to eat them but if they are not here i can't eat them.

Just have to wait and see if i need to get another scan as a month out is a bit of a difference i think.

On the gardenning size i think i might have to delagate jobs to hubby to do and be the foreman.
Baby is gona have to but up with the elements with me (as long as baby is dress appropriate). As am a real outdoor person, Also baby is gona grow up hating sheep, I have baby books on sheep and planing to get lots of sheep things lol

And I'm quite happy to walk another surrogate grandchild around for an hour or two to let you get on with your garden. ;D

The only advice i can give you is to involve the child as nuch as possible.  My son helps me to water all my crops.  Due to this he now leaves them alone.  It has now become part of his routine.  Even though the calls them all "flowers".  He knows, after lengthy chats with watering cans that these are special flowers and he doesnt play, pick or stand on them.

So involve him as much as his age will allow and he will grow up knowing where food comes from and has a respect for what your doing.  Obviously keep an eye on him.  It can be hard work but well worth the effort.

Good luck with your choice.
