Morning All & Dixie

Dixie you are gonna be a grandma soon, the eggs are chiring at me ;D

Now do I...

1..Leave mum and the babies in the coop with the other chicks or shall I remove them to there own home?? (a huge run within the hut), at the mo they are in a large house with 5 other ladies however to get in and out they have to go up high ramp (scared the babies may fall off??)

2..If its best to move them what shall i put on the floor of the run(saw dust, wood chip towel??)

3..I have chick crumb and water at the ready but do I need to provide owt else??

Sorry for all the question

Im soo excited...lol

Hi Maddox, how exciting!!  I wouldn;t keep her in with other hens, they may attack the chicks. I always use shavings on the floor. Once hatched they wont eat crumb for 24ish hours as they are still absorbing the yolk, but make sure water is available. I mix layers pellets in with the chick crumb so mum can have both!! Mine are 2 weeks old now and feathering up!
And another sat tight on 6 eggs, due to hatch next week! let me know how it goes! ;D

Oh dear tricky one! if you move her now she may become too unsettled and abandon them, how are the others with her at the moment? If you leave her the others may not be too pleased to welcome the chicks! Can you do something clever with a cardboard box maybe to put around her so she's separated, then move her once they all hatched and she's up and about?

Hi

Thought that might be the case but i have a cunning plan my lord!!!....lol

How about I dont move her out but move the others out???, the chicken coop is within a large secure shed.
I can then shut her in so the others cant get to her & chicks, when she is up and about and chicks hatched I can then move them out and let the others back in????

How does that sound?? or would it be a bad idea to shut the others out??

That sounds a good plan to me!  better to move the non-broodys than the broody.  I've lost chicks by moving a broody.
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age
