Herbal worming for chickens
« on: November 06, 2012, 05:45:09 pm »
Hello  :chook: ,

Understand that there is a shortage of chemical wormer at present as main factory relocating etc.

Told that I could put garlic bulbs in water drinkers to worm hens naturally, then feed soaked bulbs to them as well, no taint to eggs or meat...does this work, anyone tried it?

Please don't experiment with wormers manufactured for other species - recipe for disaster.   As for mealworms surviving long enough inside a hen to eat their worms - well, pull the other one  ::)

As far as I know Marriages layers pellets with wormer is still available direct and works beautifully, is easy to dose as you just feed it for 7 days, with no withdrawal period for eggs, and most importantly - it's licensed for use in poultry.

Mealworms and Maggots will break up a bound crop but don't rely on them as a wormer Carl. They will quickly suffocate in the digestive tract.

Caution with Flubenvet. We bought a 240 gramme pack instead of the usual 60 gramme. I was going to mix as usual, one 6g scoop to 2Kg of feed but fortunately read the instructions. The 240 gramme tubs contain Flubenzole  at 2.5% concentration, not the 1% concentration of the 60g tubs. I therefore need a 6g scoop to be mixed with 5Kg of feed.

We use Verm-X herbal parasite pellets on a monthly basis and have very healthy girls. We also give them a regular treat of Poultry Spice. Neither are that expensive and last quite a while.
I think a lot of health problems are down to bad or badly maintained housing or runs.

If you haven't already done so, might be worth doing a faecal worm egg test - if you only have a few, and they free range, they may not need wormed.

One of my local suppliers now has Heygates pellets with flubenvet as well as Marriages so might be more widely available to people without a Marriages stockist nearby.

I was going to post the same today.

OH went to see if they had any Marriages with Flubenvet at our local supplier which is 20 or so miles away. They said they were unable to source any Marriages but were offering medicated Heygates as an alternative .... with Flubenvet.

I think it was £9.99 for 20 kg ..... will check on that if anyone needs to know.

You can buy the Marriages Flubenvet on line easily enough - I had some delivered last week (from Farm and Pet Place £10.99 for 20 kilos plus postage of £2.99) since I reckon it's cheaper than driving half way round the county trying to get some.

Ironically one of my cockerels is currently critically ill because of worms - the vet has warned me he might not make it. Given that I gave them all the Marriages Flubenvet at the end of September just after they arrived, it's got my wondering how effective it actually is unless you can be sure it's the only thing they eat all week. Mine have quite a big run so even if they're not free ranging, I think they find plenty of other things to eat too. The vet has also said that they've seen plenty of cases of bad worms in chickens that have been treated with herbal worming so he's certainly very sceptical of herbal wormers, FWIW.

I'm beginning to hate worms! Especially as now I know they're there and there's nothing I can do to the ground to treat it.

Very important that they are only able to eat the medicated feed and absolutely nothing else HesterF, otherwise the dosing will be ineffective. Herbal worming and occasional ACV water additions will discourage worms but won't kill them all and will lead to selective evolution of resistant worms. Flubenvet is the only thing you can rely on in my experience. Heavily infected chickens can die during worming treatment because of the toxins given off by dying worms. So you need to stay on top of it and worm every 6 months maximum or take the risk.

Easier said than done re. eating nothing but pellets for the week. Even if they were shut up in their house for the week, I'm sure they'd peck at the bedding or something. I guess the only way to be sure is to have the neat solution and dose them direct - but then you have to know all their weights to calculate the dosage.

Cockerel still fighting....
