Hi from a newbie in East Lothian
« on: October 22, 2012, 10:16:25 am »
Have meant to introduce myself before but I get side tracked with all the interesting posts and articles and messages!
We have been organic veg growers for many years but recently acquired more land and now aim to keep enough animals to keep us self sufficient in muck and to grow all the feed for the animals ourselves. As we don't want to get into meat production big time, we decided to keep rare breeds. It has been a very steep learning curve. Now having found this site I am afraid I think I will be asking lots of questions as there seem to be soo many knowledgable people out there.
At present we have a Shetland, an Irish Moiled and a Beltie cross cow, Hebridean and Jacob sheep, Kune Kune pigs, GG and Pygmy goats, Chinese geese, pekin bantams, a pony, dog, lots of cats and two guinea pigs!
We went to the Smallholder event in Forfar which I thought was brilliant. Well done to all who organised it, I know how much work must have been involved! Thank you.
Bye for now.

Hi Susannah  from north Cumbria
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

Hi Susannah from a gloriously sunny Moray.

We've got Shetland cattle too - 15 of the lovely beasties- cows and heifers, 5 calves and a steer.  Great cattle, but then I'm biased.

How's your Beltie Cross? I've heard they can be a bit of a handful sometimes...

Regards

Sue
