flying shetland sheep

just had a new ewe lamb air mailed to us from foula an island 20 miles off the coast of shetland. less stressful than a rough crossing on a ferry. the two ladies on the flight fought it was funny.

really? I saw a few months back a couple of shetland ram lambs for sale on foula, but I assumed I would have to go by boat to collect them - did this wee one really fly? what were the arrangements?

You must be made of money, does she lay golden lambs. Are there not enough Shetland sheep on Shetland for you? There are huggins for sale now. Wish I had enough money to fly one ewe in , a ram maybe but it must be one special shetland ewe!   Good luck with her she must be a special  :thumbsup:

The Foula Shetlands we have seen are a different type from the main Island type, so well worth bringing in.

They used to send calves on the train, tied in sacks and carried in the goods van....is this the modern version?   I have heard that the sea trip to Foula can be very rough, a bit like the one out to St Kilda.  Definitely not for me  :P  nor for your little ewe  :)

Fleecewife lots of sheep come from Foula , the ferries full of them sometimes and ponies. The meat is very popular with butchers and restaurants. What I am asking why 'fly' one ewe in? He can do what he wants of course , it is just a first and shocked me. Especially when  a man who lives in the middle of Pauls croft and mine goes to Foula every day in his own boat.

not made of money it cost a £1 to fly her. we did not arrange it the seller did. the seller was worried about the crossing. the lamb was a bit of a pet.

this was a rachel special nowt to do with me apart from paying. she has a very good freece and the colour that ruth want for her weaving so its fine with us.  we have flown chickens to fair isle.

She is very cute and looks perfectly happy in her crate  :sheep:  I expect she will manage to be 'a bit of a pet' with you too shetlandpaul, even if it's against your better judgement  ;D .      Just £1 to fly her - that's amazing!!   It would have cost an arm and a leg by Parcel Force.

I got her because it has become increasingly difficult to fine a good quality fleckit shetland that isn't related to our flock,  she is really well breed and of course a lovely colour and she has much more wool then the rest of our lambs of the same age. As stated she is a foula sheep which as they are a 'closed' isle so to speak ie they are not allowed to bring in any sheep they have become slightly different to the mainland shetland sheep.  As stated the flight only cost £1 which really is a drop in the ocean for transporting animals.  The flight is alot less stressful then any boat no matter who sails it as it is alot less rough and alot quicker plus there were no more ferry loads of sheep coming out for a while.  She being one of our animals of course has to have a name so I am pleased to intoduce Amelia named after Amelia Earhart of course.  Hope you enjoy the photos.

I never knew there was a 'last minute cheapo air tickets' for sheep!

Anyone know if such a thing exists from Iceland...?  :-J :eyelashes: :innocent:
