Can I feed yeast to pigs ?
« on: May 25, 2009, 11:14:52 am »
We have very kindly been given 30kg of yeast from a small local organic brewery just down the road from us. There was a note pinned to it saying that they knew we had pigs and hoped we could use it. Can I feed it to them? and if so how? I have visions of pigs flying or worse still exploding!! will not feed to them until I have had some advice !
Cheers Ginny

We used to give dogs a nob of bakers/brewers yeast once a week if they were nervous, but no use for it otherwise.

I'm sure I read something about feeding yeast on the DEFRA website, but I'm afraid I can't remember what it said!  Sorry that's not much help is it!

iS IT YEAST OR DISTILLERS MASH? iF IT'S DISTILLERS YOU CAN SUPPLEMENT AT 1/3 OF FEED RATIO....BUT YOUR DIFFICULTY MIGHT BE PALETABILITY. iT HAS A VERY STRONG TASTE (JUDGING BY THE SMELL....NOT THAT I'VE TRIED IT MYSELF!). Opps just noticed that the kids left caps lock on, and i'm not going to re-type! Hope this helps.

What breed of piggies do you have? Mine are quite finiky too. Going to buy a garden shredder tomorrow and see if I can add all manner of veg to the mix (at 1/4 feed value). Mine love apples, bananas (without the skin, picky buggers!), grapes, melons. They also love tomatoes but it tends to scour them. They dispise cucumber.

Hi Morgan

We have Heinz 57 variety at present, sourcing different breeds this side of the pond seems to be hard, although i have just been put in touch with a guy with 2 saddlebacks who might be interested at breeding, so fingers crossed for the future. Fed the pigs a couple of cups of the distillers mash this morning with their dry fed and no problem, they yummed it up, well their mother has been known to enjoy a pint or 2!! They love most veg, picking out their favourite things first and go mad for bananas, the 2 girls wolf them in one go but Colin peels his then eats the skin first and then the flesh, thought it was a one off at first but no thats how he likes them !!
cheers Ginny

Morgan dahhhhlng you should be feeding the cucumber very finely sliced in brown bread with the crusts cut off.  A la Buckingham Palace.  ;D

Hmmmm, just looking at my little aristocrats....they are a lovely red/brown....but I don't think they'll pass as corgis. Perhaps I should bring my Tamworths to balmoral next time I get the ol' gilt edged invite! Tally Ho!

I've just emailed our local brewery to see if they have any distillers mash going for free!  Don't know if that's a bit cheeky, but nothing ventured nothing gained as they say!

Isn't it terrible that to make any sort of money on pork, you either have to feed sh*t meal, or go around cap in hand. I do wish consumers would remove their heads from their posteriors and realise what crap pork they are getting from supermarkets.

Our pigs love brewers yeast and spent grain and will always go for this first before picking out their favourite fruit and then veg.
