We got 4 turkeys with the intention of eating one & breeding from the rest....  :roflanim:  No chance... I called the male 'Tuvok'  and he is my favourite creature on the field!!   All 3 ladies are lovely & they all talk to me & follow me everywhere - When we first got them they were not friendly at all, so I kept hand feeding them with chickweed to tame them a bit & now they get rather verbal if I forget to take the chickweed down for them, We shall eat most of the babies though, maybe keep a few more hens, possibly...  :D
Sheep: North Ronaldsay & 4 Horned Hebridean - We also breed & exhibit 3 breeds of rabbit - Chinchilla, Deilenaar (rare breed) & Colour Pointed English Angora.

Well I let my Turkeys breed naturally and we have turkey all year, not just for xmas at all. Folk keep asking me to sell them but I cant see the point in selling meat when I have to buy it again from a shop! I only eat my own meat and the turkeys are a good source, more bang for your buck than chicken! We normally have goose on xmas day anyway . Turkey in our house is as Mr Matthews is to bootiful, an everyday meat.

Hermit i keep trying to persuade OH to do just that but with little success   he thinks they require too much room etc   would you have any tips you could share? :sunshine:

hi padge, I have Wild Americans which are small and hardy, we dont think we could do this way of turkey keeping with the large commercials. Mine can mate naturally and are good brooders and parents, ie as mine are the original turkeys they do well more naturally. Mine graze more like geese and only get fed at night when I lock up and some in a morning while i am doing the milking, as we have no deadlines such as xmas we dont need to feed to fatten , just let nature take its course. They share the goat paddock and only fly in and out to nest in the bushes, they come back with the babies when they are ready. Mine dont mix with the chooks at all so no risk of blackhead and we have no foxes so if they want to stay out they do. Otters dont come near the house so they are not a danger either. We dont let them have tinies over winter as that would be too much to house and feed so as i did yesterday destroy any nests I find till spring. They lay better than the ducks , longer season and just as good eggs , the eggs up here in town sell at 75p each but I just sell them as duck egg prices. I think thats all about my turkeys at the moment, if you have a paddock( and no close neighbours as they do fly) and a good shed Wild Americans are a good buy.

Turkeys can be quite cute in an ugly sort of way -think Sid James.  Hope they do well but you and OH don't get too attached.

Love the pic of them going to meet their (temporary) fieldmates.  Keep focusing on how edible they look, not adorable.   ;D

It was so funny the ducks were pretty spooked by them and the goats just though what the h**l are those - not to get attached but they are entertaining - rounded up fine for bed time - no complaints so far  :fc:
