Hello and welcome to TAS.

I have also started smallholding this year, although in Somerset not Wales. Good wellies definitely a necessity, even when it's not raining. It is an exciting time although also very tiring once all the livestock has arrived. Make sure that you give yourself a rest every so often.

 hello to everyone who has said hello.

I'm very interested to hear what livestock (and breed) those of you living in Carmathenshire are rearing.... and anything you would definitely rule out!

 :pig:,    :cow:   :goat:   :&>:sheep: :   ????

My other half has no experience at all so the initial decisions are all mine..... rare breed or commercial, mix or specialise  .... I sometimes think it would be easier to have no prior experience at all!

Linda,
We only have 2.5 acres so can't have too much stock. Not sure whether thats a good or a bad thing
Myself and my OH are complete novices at just about everything. We only moved here in Feb with no experience, other than a one day pig keeping course, but since have had 2 pigs  :pig: :pig: (went to slaughter week before last) we also have 5 pedigree sheep  :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: :sheep: bought from Kaz. 2 Ryelands and 3 Coloured Ryelands. They have currently gone back to Kaz for a tupping holiday. We also have 2 geese, 3 ducks and 7 chickens.
Good luck with your move

Croeso a llongyfarchiadau!
Well done on making the right choice - hope your plans all work out. I'm in Caerphilly, but used to work a lot in Carmarthenshire and get back there whenever I can. Lovely part of the world and lovely people, too.
Feel free to ask advice on here as you find your feet on your smallholding - you'll get lots of answers!

Hi Linda,
We have 3.5acres + commoners rights on the mountain. We and have a small flock of sheep consisting of badgerface and black welsh mountain sheep,
 gloucester old spot pigs,
 20 ducks of various varietys,
 2 goats (togg x and a BS)
 40 odd chickens,
 7 geese (6 embden 1 toulouse).
We have had the pigs and goats for around 2 yrs but are relativley new to sheep, but now completely addicted.

Thank you all for the encouragement and ideas.... just itching to get started!

Now looking at border collie puppies! ...... had collies for 20 years,  then when Sam died 7 years ago I decided to go to a collie rescue 150 miles away for a new one .....with children in on the choice we came back with the only dog they had that was only half collie! (Jovi we love you!).  He is half gundog too and has a mega fanclub including my grandaughter who dragged him around when she was 2 and looked up at him!
Now though I'm concidering (or that is what I'm telling my OH!) a new collie puppy..... prefer B & W midlength coat.    ....... any other collie nuts on here?

Well, there's a member called colliewoman...  ;)

I'd suggest you start a thread in Dogs to get all the collie fans rounded up - I'll see you there!  :)

Oh, and one in Marketplace if you are ready to buy a pup.
