twisted gut
« on: September 22, 2012, 05:22:13 pm »
Sadly today, a pygmy goat had to be put to sleep as she had a twisted gut. She was 7 months old. can anyone advise me if this is a genetic condition as she was a twin and I am now worried her brother may also get this condition.
pygmy goats, gsd, border collie, scots dumpys, cochins, araucanas, shetland ducks and geese,  marrans, and pea fowl in a pear tree.

As far as I am aware, it is not a genetic condition. However, I have known "families" of goats which have seemed to be more prone to it. That said, it wouldn't be every animal in the family, just a couple spread over over a big family. We seemed to have a little outbreak of it about 10 years ago in our BT's. I would treat her brother as normal- there is nothing to say he will get the same thing.

I'ts a miracle more goats don't get this, when you think about all those stomachs being hurled about as the goats jump on everything they can find , and standing on back legs to greet each other , all hop skippity.
Just a case of bad luck , sad when it happens.
Sorry for your loss
