And still it rains...
« on: September 20, 2012, 10:04:37 pm »
As I slipped and slid over the saturated ground in one of our fields earlier, I wondered how everyone else was faring and if anybody else has concerns for the coming months?   :gloomy:

The ground is already sodden, how can we possibly manage autumn and winter on top of it??!

Maybe we'll have a mild, dry winter.  (Says she optimistically)

More often than not Thursday morning is a time where we can speak with a fair amount of certainty about the weather across the UK during the weekend, but this week it's a little more tricky. The reason for this is that tropical storm Nadine is down to the southwest of the British Isles currently and is looking increasingly likely to spawn a new low pressure system and send it towards the UK. What this will mean that after a mainly dry, bright start to the weekend on Saturday, it'll be replaced by wet and windy weather from the southwest late Saturday onward. Although 'child of Nadine' isn't going to be a tropical storm or anything like that, it's likely to have a good amount of energy within it so there is the potential for some really heavy rain within the system - 50mm plus possible in some places and winds gusting 50-70mph plus. There is some real uncertainty over all of this though with the models struggling to a) decide how likely this is, and b) nail down the most likely track and intensity of the system should it develop. This is definitely one to watch though with some severe weather likely should it occur, and at this point the percentage chances are increasing with a 75% likelihood of quite a nasty spell of weather. At closer range it's that much quieter but we still have some heavy and persistent rain around during the next 24-48 hours - chiefly across southern Scotland and northern England where a band will tend to get pretty stuck, just slowly moving south into the midlands during Friday before dying out. To the north of that band across central and northern Scotland it's drier and brighter but chilly with a few showers about. Further south there will be some showers into Wales and the Midlands but it's chiefly dry and warmer here today with highs peaking into the high teens. it looks bad greenmoor winter dosent look good ether with a cold spell erley november

Been raining here pretty heavily for the past two days too, skies look full still towards the moors so no doubt we'll have a drop more before the day is out, already the pig paddocks are looking bogging, hope it dries out as want to try and keep the pigs outside until december at least. :fc:

Surprisingly we haven't had much rain in south/mid wales the last few days. There have been a couple of heavy showers but OH has managed to get a fair bit of outside painting done.

we were talking about this the other day, we have several "choke points" where we have no choice but to walk and which always get churned up in the wet. They haven't really recovered from last winter and are still quite soft underfoot. Gonna be a muddy winter I reckon.

Seems to have rained non stop the last couple of days.  Fields with animals in are terribly muddy. Pig pen ...well, will not describe that, but I got stuck when my wellies got sucked under last night.  And on my way with their water, I slipped on the wet grass, and chucked the bucket over myself. Wet already, so whats a bit more water?  Its not just wet, its cold, and of course it goes dark a lot earlier.
Animals all miserable cos they are standing in, and they want more food .....

We've actually got standing pools of water in our bottom field and the sheep have decamped into our neighbours field.  They have plenty of grass here so we suspect they've gone to get away from the wet ground!

The puddle that floods the bottom of the lane seems to have turned into a permanent feature rather than just something that lasts an hour then drains away (much to the kids' delight I should add!).

It was supposed to be a nice sunny day - cold, but sunny - and then, about half an hour ago, there was this mighty shower... Only for five minutes or so. Enough to get everything wet again. (Good excuse not to cut the grass today!  :innocent: )

In Shropshire we had two days that looked as if the rain was about to fall but didn't.  Today it did!  It's hardly stopped all day apart from a brief spell when the sun broke through.  It shone straight in my face and woke me up.   ???

It's not been too bad here, which is surprising as the northwest usually gets it worse.  Managed to have a dry riding lesson, and the sun even came out this evening :)

Expecting a gorgeous, sunny day, so will be off up to the Lakes for a walk.  Watch it rain!

We've had our first drops of rain for about three weeks today (Cambs), the clay-y soil has set like concrete so I'm looking forward to some easier digging in the coming week - lifting the last of the spuds has been nearly impossible with current conditions so I'm going to have to crack on now I can get a fork in to the ground without breaking it.
