Alys Fowler recommends to cover with large cardboard in autumn and then chuck a deep layer of good soil on top. I tried but Dock always comes through, not so successful.It might save your back if you have a dock-free patch!

once youve dug over the first patch, the chickens would love to go through it, theyll find all the pesky slugs and grubs, and add fertiliser as they do it. When my chooks were free range they would follow behind me, scratching it up. They left quite a fine tilth once raked.

The chook solution is good , pen four  or six square yards at a time . Winter will slow the regrowth .
Once a square is down to bare earth move the pen and dig the  uncovered earth.
That way you don't bust yer braces and get too disheartened  at the vast field you will eventualy cultivate nplus you'll save a bit on chook feed & get better free range eggs .
 
 
Come spring  put them back on the first plot after a gentle forking  over after a few days move the pen on and dig out any  new roots.

I am sure that looks like you have some Horseradish there too?! Yummy-but a bit hot when home made!

I would cover it all up with the sheeting as advised,it would not take long to kill everything off,much better than using chemicals I have to say.

Leghorn, I wouldn't know what horseradish looks like if it bit me in the bum    I don't like it either    so won't be going out of my way to save it.

hard to tell from the picture - smell the root and if it makes you cry it's horseradish   -  could be dock

Sally,I am sure it is at the bottom of your picture-I had so much dug up last year-and also by the pigs and it has all grown back.,in fact,I am sure there is more of it this year.I was thinking more along the lines of it being medicinal,quite useful for ingrown toenails and other ailments lol!

Well the veg patch was run as a proper veg patch by the people here before us so it could well be horseradish.  I have just seen on the link that is good for weight loss too.  I might have to get addicted to it.
