How soon after weaning...
« on: August 21, 2012, 04:21:51 pm »
can I put my ewes back in with their female lambs without them starting to chase their mums again?
The ewes are in a very poor field just now (10 days since weaning), and I was planning to move them to a slightly better one (sharing with the hoggs) and then hopefully at the weekend back into the good field with their daughters. I normally would leave it a lot longer, but they are quite thin and I cannot walk past them anymore without being shouted at... they do get some (old and not too good quality) hay but obviously I need them to dry off before starting to give good grass/concentrate....
These are a mix of texel cross ewes and pure shetlands. I haven't felt the udders yet, but will do so tonight..

Two weeks should be fine.  I've just merged mine back together after two weeks, udders are nearly dry, certainly wrinkled.
