Poorly goat - any ideas please
« on: August 05, 2012, 09:26:44 pm »
Last night my husband reported that Misty our 3 year old Boer doe was not her usual self when he went to check on the herd. She was seperate to the others but standing in their shelter and appeared depressed.  She is normally the first one to come to see.

We went and checked on this mornaing and same thing - seperate, standing and depressed.  We brought her home this afternoon with some kids we have weaned (Misty has been dried off for about 3 months).  She will eat a little bit of sugar beet, barley straw and readigrass but no where near her normal amount - she is normally first to eat.  Have just been to check on her and she is just standing in corner of stable looking depressed - she is shifting her feet a bit so I wasnt sure about maybe acute laminitis - she isnt lame and whilst they goats have adequate grazing it is not rich and they will need moving soon.  She is in normal bodily condition, feet were trimmed last week, no diarrhoea but droppings look a bit lighter and slightly stickier than normal, I dont think she is dehydrated or have a temperature but will check again in morning.

Any ideas please - I have a faecal sample for vets and if she is still same will consult vet but any thoughts appreciated.  They are fully vaccinated - regularly wormed, have a general purpose and cattle lick etc

Thanks

Sorry to hear this, have you checked for any cuts or grazes that could be infected? How do her eyes and mouth look?
Good luck x

Has she eaten anything unusual, or a lot of something. Could she have mild bloat and therefore an uncomfortable gut? That can cause shifting around on their feet.

Severe bloat - dose with vegetable oil and bicarb of soda.
Mild bloat - generally sorts itself out, can help by syringing with bio yoghurt

Thanx for replies - her belly doesnt seem distended - not sure what she could have eaten unless fed by a passerby as field just normal with hawthorn hedge around it.  will see what she is like in am and will speak to vet if no better.

Eyes and nose seem normal - slight eye discharge which isnt unusual for her.

Misty went to vets this morning - not sure what is wrong but possibly eaten something she shouldnt.  Has had B Vit injection, antibiotics and anti inflammatories and now back installed at home.  She is eating little bits and has normal motions so will just continue with vet's meds and hope she gets better.

Thanx

Fingers crossed  :fc: I'm sure she'll be fine, especially since she's eating a bit.
