Storing straw and feed/hay - contamination!??!
« on: July 29, 2012, 11:08:10 am »
I was reading one of my books about goats and it said you should not keep straw in the same building as foodstuffs because of spore contamnination  :o  Does that mean ergo that you can't keep straw and hay in the same shed?!?

This could be a bit of a trial as we have a big shed for just that purpose.....any advice people?

Presumably they are talking about mould spores ? if your shed is dry and the bales were brought in dry and you have the hay and straw stacked on pallets for air circulation then it should not be a problem .

  brilliant. that's what we've done. no problems for us so far. Thanks Tizaala for the reassurance (had momentary panic then about needing to find more storage!

Wouldn't making sure the feed stuff is correctly stored in metal bin types also help>
