Water Trough for Kunekunes
« on: July 22, 2012, 02:17:59 pm »
Hi, I have recently acquired to lovely Kunekune gilts and am struggling to find a suitable water trough for them.  They are going to be moved regularly as I would like them to clear some land, so I don't want a plumbed in water trough.  Everything I am using at present is tipped up! Any ideas?

I use a long moulded plastic feed trough. The piglets stand in it but don't tip it up. Will try to get a photo.

We use these tyre bowl drinkers https://www.suppliesforsmallholders.co.uk/tyre-bowl-feeder-drinker-p-1276.html
They're great, pigs can't get their snouts in to tip them but they're nice and light for lifting and cleaning

I use a bucket set inside a tyre. the pigs climb on the tyre with their front feet and are able to drink form the bucket. Just make sure its filled up a few times a day. And they never seem to knock it over!

try pig nipple drinkers into a plastic water barrel barrel tied to a tree or something to stop it tipping nipples about 12-18 inches up

I took a picture for you hope this helps. You can get them half this size so two smaller ones might be better.

We use the old farm granite or concrete troughs.  They are slightly wider too, and very low.  Only problem is that one of our Kune's sits with his belly in it when it is really hot!!! I do tell him that it is unsanitary for every other user, but he doesn't seem to take much notice of me!  ;D

The rubber bowls made from recycled tyres are pretty indestructable. Wedge them into an old tyre and if they still tip it over fill the old tyre with mud before wedging the bowl in.

I use a long sheep feeder type trough like omnipeasant's but a metal one :)

Although in my one pig paddock currently is a sheep water trough that I have half berried (so they can reach) I just empty it out give it a scrub and re fill it once a week :)

Piglets currently have a rubber black horse bowl with a brick inside it so they cant tip it
