I arrived following a search for "Turkish Spindle" and found an amazing thread. I have just acquired several Scottish Blackface fleeces and need good advice on how to put them to the best use possible, This is obviously the best place to find it and I'm very happy to be here.

Maybe you should put a question in the crafts section to get more replies about the Blackie fleeces - easier to discuss there.
 I have not spun Blackie, but I think they might have similarities to Hebridean which is a double coat with a hair over layer, which can be separated and used to spin for warp.  Do they have a woolly undercoat ?

We used to have Blackies - Hexhamshire type though - on this farm but now the only horned sheep are my little Castlemilk Moorits.  The Hexhamshire Blackie can have a delectable fleece, though they aren't all.  But I hadn't started spinning when we had them around so I haven't tried it personally, sorry.

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. Fleecewife, it was your acquisition of two new Turkish Spindles that got me here and pointed me in the direction of IST Crafts. The craft section will be my first port of call as this is a totally new endeavour for me and they are raw fleeces.

Do you think I get a bonus for attracting a new member  .   I think I have made a new handspinner this morning at Biggar Show where I was demonstrating spinning, and have given a whole lot of children a beginners view - makes sitting in the wind all day well worth it

   Hi and welcome from sunny Shropshire.  When my ex and I had a spinning and weaving workshop on Isle of Arran, we were surrounded by Scottish Blackface. Customers often commented on their lovely, silky looking fleeces so my ex spun some as a sample.  It would have made excellent string or could be knitted into hair shirts.  Otherwise, I'm afraid it is no use.  I wouldn't even use it for the rugs I made.

Hi Mad Goatwoman of Madeley    Whatever it's like I will find a use for it. Maybe make some dog beds from it, cushion stuffing, insulation or maybe hair shirts for the S & M community. Living in the pig county of Hampshire the wild birds will love it
