The lamb is a LOT better
« on: July 14, 2012, 07:04:14 am »
 :)

Weightbearing on the leg.  Baaing for food, nuzzling and looking happier.  I wasn't really surprised it was low yesterday afternoon because an hour  vet examination and cleaning must have been agony.

I have to deliver the Tamworths this morning (not for profit pigs  :) ) so will clean it before I go..... I don't look forward to that because I really don't like the idea of causing it pain.  :( ... and the disinfectant and citronella must sting.  No signs of flies  :fc: :fc:

I am VERY  glad I brought the second lamb in because I am sure its meant a lot less stress for the lamb.

I'm a vet nurse who has extensive difficult to heal and specialist wound training. I was taught most things you put in a wound except for saline solution or things designed to go in wounds, will destroy wound healing and can make it take weeks to heal a wound that should take days to heal. I shudder at the thought of citronella in a wound- poor granulation tissue!

I have healed horrific road traffic accident wounds, which are mega contaminated etc, by using good old fashioned Manuka Honey- medical grade- at least grade 15+(from health food shops or your vet!) . I bet u any amount of money it will heal it faster, with less scarring and less pain as its naturally antiseptic (scientifically proven!). I would clean with a saline solution- flush with a big syringe (the solution to pollution is dilution) with a 21g needle on it- DO NOT RUB the wound as u will rip off the new healing cells. then slather it in Manuka. The flies cant get to the wnd as its completely covered in honey.

And NEVER put Hibiscrub or iodine on a wound!! And any vet that tells you to do it is a twit! (they also have like only 1 day at uni of wound care and bandage lessions....) vet nurses have months!

Glad to hear lambie better!

It's lovely when a story comes out right  :)  Well done you for all your care and concern.     I know lambie's got a way to go yet, but it certainly sounds more hopeful this morning. :fc:

I too would worry about the stuff you are being told to put on the wound. (Ref funkyfish post) If the lamb has had anti biotic injection, keeping it clean with saline would be adequate at not as stressful. You are right to have company for the wee lamb, depression through loneliness is a hinderance to recovery. Good luck.

Manuka honey really IS as good as people say it is, and very soothing!

Well done for being such a good nurse for lambie, I'm sure all will be healed soon

Catching up with this somewhat late but couldn't agree more than manuka honey is almost miraculous in its healing effects.  Absolutely brilliant stuff.  And please no oil of citronella on an open wound.  Nearby but well away from the actual wound maybe but definitely not in or on the wound.

If you want to persist with treats then try digestive biscuits or oatcakes.  The sheep who like ginger nuts are absolutely mad for them but some really don't like them at all and they are quite hard for little ones to chew.

so, just wound powder on the wound and citronella round it.  The citronella is just to defer flies.

'Net-tex Strike Plus' is very good for keeping flies off wounds. I've used it when ram lambs have broken horns.

Wound powder is pure evil! You need moist wound healing to have a healthy granulation bed for the first week or so, and wound powder dries it out. Putting wound powder on a wound is very old fasioned, I have no idea why it is still around. you would be better off super gluing a light Melolin type dressing over the wound to the wool, to cover it to protect it from flies.

Well, the wound is looking good so I'll just leave it? Do I  need to use water at all..... WAY too scared of flies to use the manuka honey!but I will stop messing with the wound.  He's barely limping and he's had his antibiotic and painrelief and is comfortable.  We're due sun here tomorrow, I'm praying for rain to keep the flies away!!!

Well done! Glad lamby is on the mend

I was told to put citronella on my pony for sweet itch - the person didn't tell me not to put it on broken skin  :( I couldn't get near him for a week.

He stood up on his back legs to get a digestive so he's fully weight bearing on the legs. I looked carefully but didn't touch it.  I put citronella on his fur, but not on him.  Hes eating well and looking very good.  We've been rainy today but are due sun tomorrow.  i'll be checking him every 20 minutes I think then!!!
