Lady Penelope is a Mother :-)
« on: June 27, 2012, 07:18:31 am »
Two so far!
Cute as cute can be, all snuffly and wobbly.

Lady P is extremely protective and not a little disturbed by our presence, so we are keeping at a distance and just letting her get on with it - she seems to be doing just fine.  Only challenge is the farrowing rails being completely stuffed with the nest stuffing she gathered yesterday, but we think we will just leave her to work it all out.

Pictures when we can get close!

12!  All alive and kicking

One teeny tiny runt already called Spot.  As in 'Spot the runt' :D

Two afterbirths and three 'mummified' piglets - all very small.

Mother and babes now sleeping!  How long does that last for?!

They are adorable!  We had one with just the same colouring as the 3rd one along, white on one side and the rest black, and oddly, one with a spot of black on the white saddle too.   They sleep and feed on and off all day and night from now on, eventually the mum will come out for nuts and water when she is hungry enough.   Congratulations - is Margot still not producing?   Tamsaddle

So happy and utterly exhausted!

Piglets and mother all asleep and doing fine, with the exception of Spot who now has a nasty cut on the left flank.  We have sprayed with iodine and are keeping a close eye on her.  But she is feeding, and with 15 teats to choose from, there are sufficient for her to have her fill too, providing one of the brutes who are twice her size don't boot her out of the way (I say her but realise I haven't thought about sexing them yet!).

A melée of piglets at the changing of the teat side...

A pile of piglets who have just been reprimanded by their very strict mother for venturing outside while she went to the loo! (Spot is on top - knows where it is warmest).

great photos

general question - what % of a litter would generally have breed standard markings? and what influence does the sow / boar have on markings? ( i have the same issue with bagot goats so its interesting for me to discuss.)
