Piglets - very lucky and embarrassed :(
« on: June 26, 2012, 08:11:02 am »
I am so ashamed of myself I can hardly bring myself to write this  >:( .  My piglets, who are ADORABUBBLE are now 9 weeks old..... and I let them have the run of the place at the weekend.... well, really its supposed to be the run of the paddocks but they are still managing to sneak through the stock fencing in places and around the stables by the house.  Its not a problem because they aren't really pootling anywhere else (i.e through the hedge onto the common!!!)

This Saturday, I took the strimmer out to start on the front lawn (yes its that bad - another cause of shame...) and LEFT THE DOOR OPEN. I would say I NEVER do this, but my previous confessions would make that untrue >:( )

....The rat poison is in that stable and the piglets got in with it.  I called the vet (I probably should have caused a doctor because I am sure I had a heartattack) but the quantity they could have consumed (about 400 grammes between 8) was minimal.  Its slaymor and it takes 2kg to kill a 10kg dog, and pigs are more resistant.

I know how much each pig weighs because in order to check its toxicity, I bought my scales out, weighed me (NATIONAL SECRET!!!) and then lifted each piglet and weighed us together..... I'm glad the video of THAT isn't on youtube!!!

3 days later they are all fine (symptoms are about 2 days) but they really didn't have enough to cause a problem. I CANNOT believe how STUPID I was though!!!! >:( >:( >:(

......I am also becoming horribly fond of these piglets..... which will make October interesting  >:( >:( >:(

The crime is not in making the mistake in the first place but if you learn nothing from it...... then that's heinous IMO  :D

Fingers crossed for the piggies. :fc:

Glad to hear they're ok.
I'm still beating myself up about 2 sheep we lost 18 months ago due to my own stupidity.
As soon as an animal coughs, I now blame myself.

KC, yes you were very lucky and I am sure you won't do it again.
Great that they are all doing fine
