Fleece or fleeces
« on: June 19, 2012, 10:19:18 am »
I guess this question is along the apostrophe line.
Can fleece be singular or plural or is fleeces the correct word for more than one fleece?

I believe sheep fleeces would be the plural if you were looking at a big pile of them. However when referring to wool as a collective commodity product, that would be 'fleece'

The correct plural in general is fleece.  I think the pile would be called a pile of fleece, BUT you could have several fleeces if you were thinking of them individually, such as for spinning, or if they were of mixed breeds etc.
And of course even lots of sheep can be sheeps if you want them to be  :innocent: :sheep: :sheep: :sheep:

I think they're fleeces if you're thinking of them as separate entities and fleece if it's a pile of amorphous wool.
