how to use a lobster creel

We live on the shore of Loch Fyne, Scotland. We walked out past low tide mark, put a stone and 2 bones in a lobster creel 12 hours later we retrieved it full of crabs. They were too small to eat so with some difficulty we removed them.
What are you supposed to do to catch langoustines or bigger crabs?

make sure the entry hole is big enough, and make the bait hard to get, eventually the crab scramble will leave the largest crabs in there.
small shore crabs can be eaten, i regularly make a bisque from shore crab and velvets, just drop them into a pan of boiling water for between 3 and 6 mins, until they just about turn red, then clean them a bit in cold water. make a stock up, then smash up the cooked crab in a bowl and add it to the stock, simmer that for 30mins then strain and use as a base for a soup or chowder, reduce it to use as a sauce for a fish or crab supper. yummy.

That does sound tasty, it seemed wrong to kill so many small crabs which might end up as big crabs, but we might try it.
Probably we need to find a way to get our heavy little boat into the water and drop the creel further out.

Lobster pots or creels are designed to be laid from a boat into deeper water really. The shore crabs you caught won't grow much bigger. Any edible crabs you catch must be above a certain size by law, as must lobsters. Any below the minimum size must be returned to the water unharmed. I don't know what the minimum landing sizes are these days but it'll be on the net somewhere.

brown crab and lobster must be sized as above, the others can be eaten at whatever size.
the trick to catching lobster is the right bait. dry salt down some gurnard for a few weeks till they are shrivelled and dehydrated, lobster prefer white fish. for crab use salted down mackerel.
these baits stink! but they work well.
lobster can be caught close to the shore, here in cornwall the old boys talk of swimming amongst the rocks, sent by mother to get dinner.
