I can't find any reference to it in my chicken book.......

When should I move the chicks on from chick crumb to growers pellets?

They are about 5 and a half weeks now and growing well.

6- 8 weeks depending on breed and size

Thanks BL. They are just coming up to six weeks now and growing well. They are cuckoo marans and already quite big.

I will get some growers next time the shop is open

Agree with Big Light. Change over gradually by mixing in with their chick crumbs ...... adding a bit more of the growers each time.

What about ducklings? Am I right in thinking they start changing to growers earlier? And how important is it that they have duck growers pellets rather that chicken growers? My Indian runner ducklings are 2 weeks old and growing pretty quickly. Thanks for advice in advance!

We had a Buff Orpington that wouldn't make the transition even though we use Smallholder Growers which are smaller pellets than most of the other brands. We used to bring her into the kitchen and grind the pellets up. We ground them up lees and less each day and after two weeks she was guzzling them down. Of course then she had the habbit of not eating until we fed her! Fortunately her brain eventually developed and now she is top hen in that flock.

Well - the chicks love the growers pellets. I detect even some preference as all the pellets were gone from the feeder this owning but there was still some chick crumb left

They also love corn and mealworms and the slugs that I throw in when I find them.
