Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

I knew the banker formerly known as Sir Fred quite well (and his fancy woman who boringly can't be mentioned).  He had a great sense of humour which I expect he can indulge on £400k a year pension for life.

I used to have lunch with Sir Tom McKillop as well from time to time but he was hard work.  Curious how his lifetime of success in pharmaceuticals turned into abject failure at RBS while his successor at AstraZeneca has just been topped.  Could it be that aspirin and money are different?

Fred's admitting that he was unqualified as a banker was seized with great glee by the press.  Actually there is  no formal qualification which is relevant to a senior banker.  Fred understood retail banking and insurance exceedingly well but he didn't understand investment banking and he was an arrogant bully who believed he was the cleverest bugger on the planet.

There is a wealth of Fred stories yet to be published.

Simple Simon,
Are you in Investment Banking?

I respect that you may not want to respond concerning your private life

but what simple Simon has missed out on with plain old Fred is he was born and brought up in ferguslie park in paisley       one of the roughest housing estates in the west of Scotland
now would he be the little snottie faced kid that was panned outside by his mother  on that housing estate when i worked there i wonder :farmer:

BUT one of my tups did have a good gossip with HM the Q at the Highland Show the other year.  It would be difficult to miss her with all the heavies shoving us mere mortals out of the way, so she could tiptoe lightly through the sheep sh*te in her unsuitable courts  ::)

No, but I was quite senior and worked at RBS for very many years until I retired.  It was a great bank in the nineties under Dr George Mathewson but got above itself with the acquisition of NatWest.  George was a man you could argue with - though you'd better be right.  Nobody argued with Fred, he just fired them.  George was tight-fisted and cautious while Fred splurged on cars, jets and that bloody stupid HQ building

Fred was being toured round a call centre one day with his usual retinue.  Fred hated seeing paper and saw a bunch of people working on paper files in a corner of the centre so he asked the manager what was going on.  Manager said he had no idea and wandered over to find out: came back with an unconvincing answer.  Further round he saw something similar, and the same routine was followed.  Fred went tight-lipped: he'd been cautioned against abusing junior staff after one threatened him with a tribunal.  Tour over Fred mullahs the manager's boss and instructs that the guy be fired immediately.  Turned out that he'd already been refused early retirement and used Fred to get himself far better terms.
