Forbidden fruits?
« on: April 21, 2012, 07:41:43 pm »
Up until recently, the boys have always rejected any other food than their mix and their hay. All of a sudden, they have got a bit more adventurous and now love sweet biscuits, although I ration them to one "petit beurre" biscuit each per day at night, when they go to bed. Its now a ritual and they know they get it when the bottom door closes. However, after weeks of trying, they have also got to love apples. They have one per day between them sliced up. What other fruits can I safely give them without fear of upsetting their tummies? Are pears okay? I assume that citrus fruits are a big no no, but what about peaches, nectarines etc? As ever, all info gratefully received!

Many thanks,

Maryxx

mine absolutely LOVE bananas!
apples, pears, plums, peaches, etc are all fine (they don't tend to eat the stones unlike pigs - I cut them out but I've heard of goats spitting them out as far as they can!)
but like everything with goats - in moderation!

Be careful how you cut them - I always remember the  "rule" I once read of cutting carrots into sticks as they can choke on "rounds"

They'll soon make it known what they don't like!
But yes, avoid citrus...

As you don't milk them - they can have the stalks/outer leaves of cabbages, and yes I cut my carrots into sticks, they may need some time to get used to bananas, my GG's for a while only ate the peel :o, but now munch all of it.

I have one goat that doesn't like apples, they all love pears, never tried them on peaches or similar too expensive here. Some will eat peppers, and some tomatoes, but not really (also tomatoes quite acidic).

I've always cut my carrots into rounds.  Mine love bananas and have banana skin most days.  Also love cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, leeks, apples, pears, peppers, tomatoes, grapes, cherries, plums (and yes they are good at spitting out the stones), melon.  would be quicker to put what they don't like.
