How old are supermarket egg before we consume (saying we bought and ate them on the same day)

I'm not sure exactly how old supermarket eggs are, but as a general gauge for eggs I was always told that the more the yolk stood up from the white (if you cracked it onto a flat surface) the newer the egg, if the profile of the yolk is close to that of the white then it's an older egg. But that may all be old wives tales

just wondered, Annie gave me some eggs from her hens and i was just wonder what age of the egg from the supermarket would be, (i was showing hubby, a bit plan to get him to let me have chickens).

maybe i should get some and set them up  in the garden and then 3 days later come running in waddling in from the garden shouting some one has put chickens in the garden lol

I put the date on all my eggs as they are collected,and because of demand they are never more than a couple of days old when I give them away or sell them.. I thought supermarket eggs were date stamped but I haven't bought any for about 8 years so I might be wrong about that.

In our condition, surely your other half would let you get away with anything. Just tell him it's a hormonal thing.

i think the ones i had where battery (sorry guise very low food budget).

i did have a friend who had a chicken farm (well his family) in junior school but they collected the eggs from the cages but not sure if the supermarket egg collect process would be mechanised!


lots of things go thought my brain when am cooking sorry lol.

btw i had one of the egg and loved it, (boiled)The thing i did notice was it was quite a strong smell , but my sence of smell is super strong at the moment (but i don't mind the smell of them) and the centre was quite sweet which surprise me.

I'll have a look at the egg dating system to see if it give me any clue about age of the egg.

the story above about how the yolk sits within the white is sort of half true.

If you were to get an egg that was laid today and crack it today the yolk would be fairly flat with the white fairly runny. if you were to crack the same egg tomorrow, or a few days after, the yolk would be more raised and the white would be more formed. Then, as the egg gets older it sort of slowly returns to the flat runny stage. A very 'off' egg is really runny and watery.

So a flat egg is either really very fresh or getting a bit elderly!!

Remember that a fertilized egg 'could in theory' be incubated to hatching even if it has sat for a couple of weeks before incubation started (this had been done). That is, the egg is still pretty fresh even at two weeks old or more. The is no way it could hatch a chick if it was already decomposing after only a few days.

The laying date of a stamped egg is three weeks before the "best before" date. Shops cannot sell eggs more than three weeks old.>

My OH is convinced that they can still be stamped 2 weeks after being laid, don't know where he has this info from, but he read the broadsheet papers a lot, so maybe it's true, lol

Linz with anything other than eggs I would say on a low budget go for the cheapest.  With eggs, if you can possibly get free range please do, especially if they are from a very small producer.  The feed that is given to those poor prisoners is disgusting.  (Well it certainly was when I lived in UK dont suppose its improved much).  My thoughts are that with baby coming along you want to feed him/her the best.  I do understand about budgets and food, when scouring the supermarkets I so wish I could have just half the pig feed budget for our own food bill.

Ok, will keep them for you, won't put out at gate for a few days. a dozen went out yesterday and I get about 8 a day so no problem.  How many will I keep for you? - say 2 dozen?
