A few weeks ago on county file the farmer went to buy some chickens that layed colourd eggs. He looked at some smallish lilac chickens - anybody know what they are called? :chook:

Bluebelles are grey but don't lay coloured eggs, despite the name.

It's also a hybrid and doesn't breed true

Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

I watched that. Cant be certain but I seem to remember that he first showed some of his pure breeds, think it was Buff Orpingtons and the little lilac ones I seem to remember were lavender peekins. I was watching it late at night with a glass of red wine so I dont mind being corrected!!!!  ;)

Think he talked about the pure breeds falling out of fashion because they didnt lay as many eggs as modern hybrids. He then went to collect some hybrids bred to produce coloured eggs.... dark brown, blue and white. Cant remember if he said what these hybrids were called ..... I didnt recognise them as any of the hybrids that I know. Think they might just have been developed because the breeder said that it was a secret which hens had been used to develop the blue egg layer.

We have a pair of lavender peekins. They are lovely little birds but dont lay blue eggs. The eggs are small and creamish in colour. Peekins are not known as prolific layers though I have some pure peekins which are mixed colours and they lay their little socks off!

Surely they were lavender aracaunas? Lilac chickens, which lay blue eggs  :chook: They come in large fowl and bantam form. I also just so happen to be looking for some hatching eggs if anybody locates some.

Yes, Little Blue .... did he actually use the word Legbar though? ..... they looked similar didnt they? Guessing that was a good part of their breeding.

Think the little lavender ones were peekins. I dont think he meant that they layed blue eggs that was a sort of introduction comparing pure breeds to hybrids. I didnt know that you could get hybrids that laid blue eggs. Probably new to tap into popularity of chicken keeping nowadays.

I'm almost certain he did.
Think I recorded it for o/h, I'll check

Adam's own birds (at the start of the clip) were lavender pekins, with little feathery trousers.
The Legbar type, ISA brown & white were all hybrids, from the "turkey" guy...
