Lost my Dutch bantam
« on: March 28, 2012, 09:29:52 pm »
She seems to be literally lost rather than dead. She is a bit dopey and either spends the night with her husband or in a brooder box in the garage. Tonight she is nowhere to be found. I went out earlier in the evening and as I was leaving, a gang of teenagers was walking up the road. I'm not saying they did anything but I've never seen them before and seems coincidental that the chook has disappeared. I'm probably jumping to conclusions. Fingers crossed she turns up  :(

Taking into account the time of year, I reckon she'll turn up in about 21 days with some chicks in tow :D
We'll turn the dust to soil,
Turn the rust of hate back into passion.
It's not water into wine
But it's here, and it's happening.
Massive,
but passive.

Bring the peace back

I have kept poultry for many years, and bantams especially are very good at finding a hidey hole to lay their eggs, and then sit on them.  If your bantam is sitting somewhere, she will more than likely appear morning or evening to look for food.before running back to her nest ......I have followed quite a  few of mine back to hidden nests after watching them come for food!!

I hope she does turn up, she probably will and then you'll feel bad about those teenagers ;)

Lost one of my Friesian Fowl ...... she appeared the next morning. Couldnt catch her and couldnt see where she disappeared to afterwards. She didnt appear yesterday morning and wasnt in the coop last night. Searched for her again ( as we had the day before with no luck) ......found ...... a pile of feathers in a field across the lane. Poor love ..... she must have been taken off her nest. :(

Love my hens to free range but the Friesians seem to become almost semi wild. They dont take kindly to being confined in a run either. Beautiful girls but not easy to keep.

Hope your bantam has better luck.

I neglected to update. The lost Dutch bantam turned up the next morning. I have no idea where she spent the night but she was happily mooching around the field when I went to let the rest out. She now spends every night in the brooder box and will ask to be let in. Tonight, however, she is in another box as the brooder box and heat lamp have been commandeered by a poorly Muscovy.

Sounds like she had a bit of a fright being out on her own. Pleased she is back safe and sound Brijjy. Probably nothing to do with the kids on the road, but I can understand your suspicions -they do all sorts of stupid things having not yet developed sufficient brain power to rationalise the consequences of their actions.
