So, after finally confirming that Betty my house cow wasn't preggers (even though she looked it-apparently its just her shape) we've just had the genus man out to AI her. Fingers crossed for 9 months!

Good luck! One of mine held to her second AI, the other had three goes and then went to a bull who nicked her the day she arrived.

Next year, I'm just going straight to the bull

Hillie the house Jersey took FOUR goes - but I now understand just how sensitive these lovely little creatures are, and know that it's so important to keep their stress levels to an absolute minimum for at least five weeks after insemination.  (The first time I'd weaned her set-on calf, the second I weaned her own calf, the third I'd changed where I milked her - the fourth time, the whole farm was instructed, "NO CHANGE!" for five weeks!!  )

Our sucklers, however ....  We haven't had a bull this last year, and out of 20 cows and 16 heifers, we repeated service on only 2 cows and 3 heifers.

So, Captain, keep Bessie happy and unstressed - and fingers crossed!  What did you put her to?
