Anglo Nubian boobies...
« on: February 10, 2012, 09:27:58 pm »
Just a random one....
For those of you with ANs, when they were maidens, how big were their udders?
I got Jill about a month ago, and she had been AI'd before I got her. Her owner said she came back into season 20 days after the AI, and hadn't been re done or sent to a billy.
No probs there, I wasn't worried and would have waited till next autumn to try again, BUT having had a closer inspection today she has the beginings of a bag :o :o, not just teats which are about the size of my little fingers and a bit bigger round, but a bag too. Not huge but definitely there. She is bigger teat wise than all my other girls who are pregnant. ???

Many thanks in advance.

Give me a ring   on 01647 231456  & will see if we can come to some conclusion.

It is possible for a goat to appear to be in  season after being covered AI or otherwise,  but actually be in kid.

Phone line gone to poo! try again tomorrow night if you are free?
I got her dates, she was AI'd on the 15th of December and came into season again on the 17th and 18th if I understood the previous owner correctly ??? But that doesn't make sense so I think I have misunderstood what the second 2 dates were for!
Apparently she came billying again on the 4th Jan, but hasn't done anything since. Normally has 19 day cycles. Nothing since she's been with me. But this would be too soon to start bagging up I would have thought?
Perhaps she will be a maiden milker, though I  have no experience with those either :D

Anglo-Nubian's hardly ever become maiden milkers, and it would be very unlikely to happen in February. June yes, it could be a possibility, but not now. It does sound like she might have been caught at some point. Check to see if her tailbone is raised at all.

Not yet it isn't, the lady who had her before is sure she isn't in kid, but I just don't know. She has that look in her eye if you get my drift.... oh well we will see what the scanning lady says :)

Although I am not a betting type of person, I would think your girl is in kid.... Has she kidded before? And if the previous owner kept males (even male kids) there is a good chance she managed to get herself "into trouble"...

My GG is due in 4 weeks time and has for the last week started to develop an udder again, not tight, but definitely something in there, but she has been ridged up for over two weeks now :-\, not sure of this is good or not. The BT is due in 5 1/2 weeks and also has started to ridge up - both are seconds timers...

I think she is in kid too, but there were no males on site, but a failed AI about a month before I had her.
She has never kidded before, and is a 2010 kid

Goatlings/First kidders can develop their udders quite early on...

I had an A.N. who was a maiden milker. She was adamant she wasn't going to be mated whatever we did and milked constantly for the two years we had her :)

She has never kidded before, and is a 2010 kid

So do you know when the AI was done? Do you know if she has been lambivacced/heptavacced regularly before? If not - I would count back from her expected "due" date and give two shots of Lambivac (2ml under the skin) with the first one 7 weeks before and the second one 3 weeks before. If she has been done before, only do one course (which would be due sometime in spring anyway) 3 weeks before. It does protect the kids for a few weeks if they get a good amount of colostrum.

Have fun guessing!
